Practising human resources in the current climate is challenging. If you speak to most HR Managers they will tell you about the pressures faced by their teams to deliver on commercial business priorities (like restructures and negotiating EBAs), maintaining the morale and well-being of their staff, attracting and retaining top talent and dealing with those difficult people-related issues that fall into the “it sounds like something HR can look after” basket. The story is remarkably similar irrespective of industry or sector. These days it seems that organisations are aiming to provide HR services with fewer resources to support hefty business plans with aggressive timeframes. With all this hiring, supporting, fixing and firing, who is supporting the HR folk?
It wasn’t too long ago that I was walking the challenging, and at times, lonely HR highway. There are many blind corners, U-turns and unmade roads to be negotiated, and often the road signs are blurry or just not there. Often HR is the last to ask for professional or practical HR support. In many cases, it takes the “kit bag of tried and true tricks” to be exhausted, with the problem still prevailing, before the flare gun is fired. Thankfully, there are organisations that provide HR support to HR and non-HR professionals alike. HR support and expertise comes in many practical forms, such as revamping performance management frameworks, partnering with HR to support ER case management, strategic job design and coaching to deal with complex and challenging people issues, all of which we actively provide to many of our clients.
Having been on many sides of the HR fence – in house, outsourcing, consulting, private and public sector – I often reflect on why, at times, I made my job so damn hard for myself! Perhaps it was pride, or a reluctance to let go, or the idea that no one could do it as well as I could. For me, it took me to hit my limits to see the value in the support and expertise that was available to me. I was fortunate to have a very skilled and astute coach work with me, propping me up with practical strategies and humour. I am privileged to now work with him.
