Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluation

The CFCE is an innovation in the management of psychological injury claims. It has been designed to provide a tangible measure against which duties in the workplace can be assessed to determine their suitability.

Primary benefits include:

  • Assisting in the management of psychological injury claims by assessing an individual’s cognitive capacity (such as awareness, perception, reasoning and judgment) in the context of their ability to perform required employment duties.
  • Improving return to work outcomes by assessing an individual’s cognitive capacity within the framework of reported psychological symptoms.

Service Delivery Model

Management of psychological injury claims utilising the Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluator (CFCE) involves three key stages:

  1. Cognitive Functional Assessment
  2. Worksite Assessment
  3. Case Conference with the Treating Practitioner

CFCE

Worksite Assessment

Case Conference

The CFCE provides a quantifiable measure of the worker’s capacity following psychological or brain injury.

This information enables the assessment of the worksite and the identification of suitable duties for return to work.

A report outlining the worker’s cognitive function is distributed to all stakeholders.

The duties that the worker is able to perform based on their cognitive ability are identified.

The workplace and working environment are thoroughly assessed to identify any potential stressors which may cause an increase in the worker’s psychological symptoms.

A report outlining the available suitable duties is distributed to all stakeholders.

A case conference is held with the treating practitioner and the worker to review the evidence relating to the worker’s capacity for work and the suitable duties available at the workplace.

An evidence based approach to the treatment of the worker is discussed with an emphasis on the benefits of return to work to their recovery.

The case conference is aimed at obtaining a certificate of capacity for the worker.
